WE HAVE TEMPORARILY
CLOSED THE OBEDIENCE SIDE OF OUR SCHOOL
..After many, many years during which
dog-training techniques remained in the doldrums, over the last few years especially great
strides forward have been made and more positive reward-based methods of training are
being employed, instead of the old-fashioned punishment-orientated negative approach. Some
clubs, however, refuse to move with the times and continue to advise owners that, if their
dogs do something wrong, they should be punished as a way of teaching them not to do the
same thing again. This method, properly applied by an expert trainer, can in some cases
prove to be successful. But the average pet owner is not an expert - if they were, there
would be no need to attend classes in the first place. In general, the punishment for the
deed is applied too late and all the dog learns is to avoid the punishment, not to stop
the act that earned it. This is evident in a lot of clubs where, for example, a dog is
seen to lunge towards another dog and then immediately show submission to its owner. What
the dog has learnt is that when its owner is standing next to it and another dog
approaches, the owner is going to get cross; it is good canine insurance, therefore, to
chase the other dog away before the owner sees it. It has certainly not learnt that the
act of lunging is what it has been punished for, because if it had, it would not have done
it.
We at GOOD DOG consistently urge all pet owners to think in terms of their dog's behavior
from the dog's point of view. Dog ownership will become more and more exciting for you as
your begin to understand your pet.
During the next paragraphs, we would like to express our philosophies, which was the catalyst that prompted the creation of this school:
For the most part, regardless of breed or age, each dog has its
own personality and learning pace. Each breed has its own set of advantages and
disadvantages. We teach love, reward and respect. Our PRIME directive and objective
is to train you to train your animal and to provide you with a consistent
forum for evaluation and progress. All to often, people try to rush through their
training without first getting the proper foundation the animal requires. This is
unfair to your dog and yourself. We cannot stress enough that it is NOT
important that other dogs are progressing more or less rapidly than yours, but what is
truly important is that you are establishing a basis of trust and friendship that will
last throughout the life of your dog. Be leery of those that claim they can train your dog
in a week or two.
As your dog moves forward in obedience training, you will be able to actually see the
dog's "confidence in you" build and improve, as you have now provided your
animal with purpose. You will soon become a team. Whether you wish to show your dog in
"competition" or not, may change as you progress, but if you will follow the
instructions of your trainer, you will establish good techniques that will stay with
you through this dog and any future animal you may own.
We suggest that you work with your animal at least 10 to 15 quality minutes each day. Additionally, we suggest strongly that you make training a positive, "fun" experience for your dog. This will insure the dog's enthusiasm for training and will make the learning process much easier. NEVER train your dog if your angry. If you find yourself becoming angry or frustrated...quit immediately, and don't come back to training you dog until you are again in a positive mood. ALWAYS end a training session on a successful note.
We are here because we LOVE dogs and want to help you.
Our rewards are based on YOUR success.
A well-trained and well-behaved dog is a pleasure to be around. It takes patience, love
and commitment to achieve these goals. But it's worth it!
